Formed in September 2002, the Mavron Quartet is Wales’ leading string quartet. Since 2005, the Mavron Quartet has enjoyed a residency at The Gate Arts Centre, Cardiff and in 2010 was appointed the first Ensemble in Residence at the National Concert Hall of Wales, St David’s Hall, Cardiff.

The Quartet members were appointed Junior Fellows in Chamber Music at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in 2004, following their success in the College’s inaugural CAVATINA Chamber Music Competition in 2003. Later in 2004 they successfully auditioned for the Live Music Now scheme.

Currently, the Mavron Quartet is publicised in the Concert Promoter’s Group 2012-13 season brochure, resulting in wider reaching recitals across the UK. In 2012, the Quartet will be Young Artists in Residence at the Vale of Glamorgan Festival which will include performances of Glass String Quartets in celebration of his seventy fifth birthday. As well as its public performances, the Quartet has appeared at the Senedd, the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the private London residence of the American Ambassador to the UK, Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace. Guests at these performances have included HM The Queen, HRH The Prince of Wales, current and former Prime Ministers, and Welsh Ministers.

With funding support from various organisations, the Mavron Quartet has commissioned and performed a number of collaborative pieces - collaboration being a strong ethos of the Quartet.

In 2009, with support from the Arts Council of Wales and the PRS Foundation for new music, the Quartet toured the UK with a commissioned work by Charlie Barber, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, with dance choreographed by Jean Abreu. Later that year the Quartet premiered a new commission by Dave Stapleton with support again from the PRS Foundation.

In 2010, the Quartet enjoyed performing with the American jazz harpist, story teller and composer, Deborah Henson-Conant in Galeri, Caernarfon. The following year, the Mavrons performed Schumann’s Piano Quintet with Llŷr Williams which celebrated twenty years of Live Music Now in Wales. To mark the Mavron Quartet’s tenth anniversary, the quartet has recently been awarded funding from the Arts Council of Wales, Tŷ Cerdd and the PRS for Music Foundation. This Mavron Quartet 10th Anniversary Project will include performances of commissioned works by Welsh composers Rhian Samuel and Gareth Wood and a storytelling collaboration with Liz Wier and composer Ian Stephens. These performances will take place in 2012-2013 across the UK.

Session work sees the Quartet perform with a variety of artists. The Quartet recorded on The Gentle Good’s latest album Tethered for the Storm and has performed live with the band at festivals including Glastonbury, Greenman, Brecon Jazz and Latitude.

The Mavron Quartet is currently undertaking educational and outreach work for St David’s Hall, the CAVATINA Chamber Music Trust, Live Music Now and various sponsors.
