Originally from Co. Monaghan, Ireland, Niamh began playing the violin at the age of eight and soon realised it was a passion she wanted to pursue as she got older. In 2004 she gained a place at Birmingham Conservatoire where she started studying violin. After experimenting with the viola in her second year she fell in the love with its beautiful tone and by her third year had changed to study viola full time with Rivka Golani. After finishing three years at Birmingham Conservatoire, Niamh took a gap year to teach full time and in 2008 transferred to the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama where she completed her BMus (Hons) degree with distinction in performance and was awarded the Vera Smart Scholarship.

During her two years at RWCMD she enjoyed many orchestral performances as principal viola such as Beethoven's 9th Symphony under one of the world's most eminent and respected conductors, Sir Charles Mackerras. She was also selected to play many significant solo parts with the string ensemble such as Elgar's Introduction and Allegro and Vaughan Williams' Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis. Niamh was successful in auditioning for the orchestral placement scheme in which she had the opportunity to rehearse with the Welsh National Opera in the academic year 2009-2010. In her final year at college, she was offered the position as violist in the Mavron Quartet in March 2010 and has since enjoyed a busy schedule as the newest member.

Aside from playing with the Mavron Quartet, Niamh has worked with a wide range of artists from classical to pop which have been broadcast on BBC Radio as well as BBC1, HTV and S4C Television. These performances include Sinfonia Cymru, Russell Watson, hip hop artist Kanye West, Only Men Aloud, Karl Jenkins, Catrin Finch, Charlotte Church and Rhydian Roberts. Niamh's diverse music career has also included teaching Benedict Cumberbatch the fundamentals of playing the violin for his lead part as Sherlock Holmes in the BBC's modern adaptation of Sherlock. Her career has enabled her to play with many different freelance orchestras, as well as in front of the Royal Family and MP's. She regularly does session work as well as teaching privately and as a peripatetic teacher for Gwent Music Support Service.
